I've been changing my minors every semester because I can't decide

My first semester, I declared two minors in German and Communication and New Media. Of course, I did not exactly have a choice since all five of my modules were preallocated, but that was the plan. Semester 2 came and suddenly I wanted a minor in Public Health! So I dropped both the minors and took a module in... Political Science (which was an unfortunate last minute change due to timetable clashes). 15 weeks later, I thought I liked the subject and decided to declare minors in German (again) and Political Science in my academic plan for Year 2. And then, embarrassingly, now I'm rethinking that choice again.

Look, I probably should not have made my choice so fast. I know that. But I thought I liked Political Science. Turns out I enjoyed the area of study, but not the rigid structure of the minor that was now causing problems all over my eight semesters. When a minor requires all of its electives to come from various baskets while making additional demands on academic rigor, scheduling and so on, I have to reconsider my life choices rather than attend 8 hours of classes back to back. So as I was scouring the list of majors and minors again, I found myself getting increasingly drawn to Asian Studies. The highlight of this minor was that HSA1000, the exposure module, is already double-counted in my core requirements, and one of the electives included SE3216 which I absolutely intend to bid for anyway, to clear my community and engagement pillar requirements. In other words, I could be getting a minor for the price of 12 modular credits - and why not? It sounds like a deal.

So... academic plan declaration just ended, and once again I feel my heart becoming fickle. I have been rationalizing this latest change and the trouble with me is that the more I reason with myself, the more I think it makes complete sense. Doing the Asian Studies minor would free up space for doing the Political Science modules that I actually care about doing, which is probably just one or two of them. It would be so much more flexible to choose from over 30 modules across 5 departments than to guess which Political Science module will be open in the upcoming semester, which is already enough work as a Theatre major where classes frequently disappear due to insufficient enrolment. On top of that, I would be able to clear all of my modules on time, and still have space for a few electives every now and then. Maybe if I am in the mood for an overload in Year 3 Semester 1, or if I happen to be eligible for a semester abroad, I could pile on extra classes and clear whatever requirements I need too.

On that point, I do want to study abroad. I just have no idea if I want to do it as part of a semester exchange, during the summer break, or to skip it altogether until I have the time and resources for postgraduate studies. I plan on getting the visa to London after I graduate, special thanks to NUS for being a global top university which makes its students eligible for the work visa, so it's not exactly a must to travel overseas as a student. That said, I'm interested in heading to Glasgow (since they were so sweet as to give me an offer) or one of the more arts/liberal arts oriented universities for a semester if I can. That would be an interesting experience, and not-so-secretly, I kind of wish for a chance to try living out of Singapore too. If I get the scholarship, that would be the sign I need to go for it. The email is in, I'm going out for my final battle to the prize on the 28th of July.

I'm trying to put together the full range of possibilities that would work with my degree plan, because there is just so many things I want to do. My major in theatre studies is a given, and I plan to do every single performance-based module there is because that is the best pathway I have into a postgraduate course after university. And then this child wants to do political science, Japanese studies, Southeast Asian studies, Chinese translation, German language, and would happily eat up whatever liberal arts concoction NUS can come up with. Artificial intelligence? Game. Physiotherapy and astronomy? Sure. Saltwater, electric vehicles and the chemical composition of burgers? All I can say for myself is, why am I like this, argh😆 So, after studying my options, I realized that the only way I can have it all is to drop the political science minor in order to keep the political science classes I want (and dump the ones that I don't), while doing a broad variety of disciplines for another minor. I insist on having two minors because I'm masochistic, fight me on that.

1st of August update: Hello everyone, I did it again! I realized that I didn't exactly want to risk my CAP with German, so I changed it to Music and Society. Yes you heard right. Music. I don't even know what I'm doing at this point. My indecisiveness is becoming a problem. At least I'm doing musical theatre, right? I mean, music and theatre. Musical theatre. Close enough. We'll save the good stuff for after graduation and if I have the money/scholarships for it.

In the meantime, I desperately need more people to visit this blog. I have the ads for it, but my earnings are negligible. Actually, last I checked it's zero. Maybe it's time to stop using this place as a pure reflective/random thing and actually start posting actual content... I'll try to do that.
